John Bamford Primary

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and Inclusion

The John Bamford Primary School prides itself as an inclusive school which strives to support all children to enable them to make the best possible progress and achieve well. To accomplish these aims, we offer a broad and balanced curriculum with high quality teaching. We provide effective support for children with special educational needs and disabilities, starting from our first contacts with parents and / or carers when a child enters our school. At some point in every child’s education journey a need for extra support may be required whether it be to plug gaps, catch up, advance learning or due to emotional, social or behavioural factors. We make sure that additional needs are identified early and we offer a range of provision according to identified needs. Early Help is implemented where necessary to ensure all needs are met and to ensure involvement of a range of other professionals, to make sure that all children receive the support they need to do well at school. At John Bamford we embrace the fact that every child is different and, therefore, the educational needs of every child are different. In terms of what we offer children with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities, this is different for every child and it is important to emphasise that, as much as possible, this provision is designed by the relevant staff members working alongside the child (including teachers, teaching assistants and support assistants), the child’s family and, where necessary, outside agencies (e.g. a Speech and Language Therapist or an Educational Psychologist).

Nurture support

At John Bamford support is offered for learning, wellbeing and behaviour. The types of support we offer include 1:1 nurture, small group nurture, Lego therapy, pet therapy and Forest School nurture. The type of support is chosen dependent on each individual’s emotional needs. Sessions may be planned or spontaneous dependent on the need of each individual child. We are fortunate to have our own nurture room creating a safe space for children should they require time to relax and chat. Our nurture staff are specially trained and resourced in order to fully support all children’s needs. Please see our Nurture policy, speak with your child’s teacher or contact the school office on 01889228689 / office@johnbamford.staffs.sch.uk for more information. Family support The inclusion team at John Bamford are trained to work with families to support and offer help for all sorts of things via Early Help and an Outcome Star assessment.
